Cockroach Control in Sydney

Most Sydney cockroach calls turn out to be one of two different problems, and each needs a different response. We start by working out which species you have, then treat it the right way: a targeted gel bait programme for German cockroaches indoors, or ongoing cover for the larger outdoor species under PerimeterCare.

The pest

German cockroaches versus the larger outdoor species

German cockroaches are small and light brown, usually found indoors near dishwashers, microwaves and kettles. A female carries her egg case until just before it hatches, and each case holds around 30 to 40 nymphs, so numbers can build quickly if the colony is left undisturbed. They breed year-round and many Sydney populations show measurable resistance to common household sprays, which is why supermarket products often make things worse rather than better. Their droppings are also linked to childhood asthma and can carry bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli. Australian and American cockroaches are larger, black or reddish-brown, and tend to live outdoors near drains, laundries, garages and gardens. These are managed as part of routine general pest cover rather than specialist indoor treatment.

How we treat it

Our approach to cockroaches

Inspection and species confirmation

We check kitchens, laundries, bathrooms and food storage areas for activity, droppings, smear marks, shed skins and egg cases, so we can confirm whether you’re dealing with German cockroaches or a larger outdoor species before deciding on treatment.

Harbourage mapping

For German cockroaches we identify the specific micro-habitats where they concentrate, such as dishwasher motors, fridge seals, kickboards and kettle bases, rather than treating blindly.

Gel bait and growth regulator treatment

Pharmaceutical-grade gel baits are applied into cracks, hinges and voids with fine-tipped applicators. The active ingredient travels back to the harbourage through the colony’s social feeding behaviour, and an insect growth regulator is paired with it to stop nymphs reaching breeding age. No surface sprays are used across benches or floors, and children and pets can return home as soon as the visit is finished.

Walk-through and follow-up

Your technician explains what was found, what was treated and any kitchen hygiene changes worth making. Results are usually visible within 7 to 14 days, and the German cockroach treatment includes a 60-day re-treatment window if activity returns.

Is it right for you?

You might need help with cockroaches if…

Small, light-brown cockroaches indoors

If you’re seeing small, light-brown cockroaches around 12 to 16mm, with two dark stripes behind the head, near appliances or during daylight hours, this usually points to German cockroaches and calls for specialist gel bait treatment rather than a spray.

Larger black or reddish-brown cockroaches outdoors

Bigger cockroaches turning up near drains, laundries, garages or the garden are typically Australian or American species. These are generally managed under the PerimeterCare annual plan alongside ants, spiders, rodents and other common household pests.

Supermarket sprays haven’t worked

If you’ve tried spray or bomb products on cockroaches indoors and they’ve come back, or seem to have scattered to new spots, that’s a sign of a German cockroach colony that needs a non-repellent bait approach rather than another spray.

Questions

Cockroaches, answered

How do I know if it’s a German cockroach or another species?

German cockroaches are small, around 12 to 16mm as adults, light brown, with two distinctive dark stripes running lengthways behind the head. They tend to appear indoors near food and water, and are often active during daylight. Larger black or reddish-brown insects near drains or gardens are typically Australian or American species.

Does the PerimeterCare plan cover German cockroaches?

For active German cockroach activity, no. The annual plan uses a perimeter approach suited to wandering outdoor species, not indoor colonies. Active German cockroach situations need a standalone specialist treatment using gel baits and insect growth regulators. Once that’s cleared, you can move on to PerimeterCare for ongoing prevention.

How much does cockroach pest control in Sydney cost?

Our German cockroach specialist treatment starts from $335 inc. GST, with a 60-day re-treatment window included. The PerimeterCare annual plan starts from $700, covering general cockroaches plus ants, spiders, rodents and other crawling pests. Final pricing depends on your property’s size, layout and activity levels, with a fixed written quote provided before the visit and no extra callout fees.

How quickly can Grove visit?

For active German cockroach situations, we typically aim to visit within five business days across the Sydney metro area. PerimeterCare bookings without active sightings are scheduled into the normal calendar at a convenient time for you.

Is the treatment safe around my children and pets?

Yes. The treatment uses gel baits and insect growth regulators applied into cracks, hinges and harbourage points where cockroaches live. No surface sprays are used across benches or floors, so children and pets can return home as soon as the visit is complete.

Why won’t a supermarket spray fix the problem?

For German cockroaches, supermarket sprays tend to make things worse. Because they’re repellent, colonies hidden behind appliances scatter to new locations rather than being addressed. Visible cockroaches die while the rest of the colony rebuilds, often somewhere harder to reach. Professional treatment uses non-repellent baits that cockroaches carry back into the colony themselves. A perimeter treatment approach works well for the larger outdoor species.

What if cockroaches come back after the visit?

German cockroach activity returning within the 60-day re-treatment window gets a free follow-up visit. PerimeterCare customers have re-treatment cover throughout their plan period for included pests. Full details are on our treatment warranty page.
